Leiko Ikemura

A Girl in the Dark, 2021
tempera and oil on nettle
90.0 x 90.0 cm
Swiss-Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura draws her inspiration from memories of her native Japan, as well as from impressions of her first stays in Switzerland. Through different forms of exploration, female silhouettes appear in cosmic landscapes midway between abstraction and figuration.

Her painting symbolises humankind’s communion with nature in a perfect fusion of the two cultures, as exemplified by the three works that have joined the Collection Pictet, which are representative of her recent practice.

Leiko Ikemura’s work has been presented in many museums and institutions worldwide since the 1980s. The Kunstmuseum Basel dedicated a solo exhibition to the artist in 2019. She lives and works between Berlin and Cologne.
