Emma Kunz

Ohne Titel (Werk Nr. 507), s.d.
coloured pencils and coloured grease crayons

Considered jewels of geometric abstraction, Emma Kunz’s drawings—which she collectively titled Cosmos—are characterised by timeless purity and entrancing properties, fed by radiations that the artist had an extraordinary ability to perceive and convey on paper.

Beyond their aesthetic value, her works were always primarily products of a process. Their compositions provided answers to questions the artist asked her pendulum, ranging from private matters to contemporary political events to the underlying principles of nature and the universe. Her drawing No. 20 is an answer to the question: “What will be the outcome of the Second World War?”. Some interpret it as a prophetic depiction of an atomic bomb explosion in Japan in 1945.

Like all of Emma Kunz’s works, the three square pieces in the Collection Pictet bear no title or signature. Drawn mainly with lead pencil or coloured pencil, all of her drawings are formally based on geometric shapes—the circle, triangle, straight line, and cross—using a symmetrical organisation to represent the dynamic laws of life.
