Sans titre, 2018
acrylic on canvas
100.0 x 100.0 cm
The black square standing on its corner against a white background (Untitled, 2018) suggests multiple references. It recalls a major work from the dawn of abstraction, Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square (1915), but it also pays tribute to the key painting series of the same size (100 x 100 cm) by Swiss artist Olivier Mosset, who painted a black circle at the centre of a white canvas about two hundred times between 1966 and 1974.

With the other painting, containing a beige circle (Untitled, 2018), Baudevin makes another reference to Mosset, who painted letters and circles on equally small canvases at the beginning of his career. He thus revives issues of anonymity and authenticity in painting. Through his appropriationist approach, Baudevin places his work within a genealogy of geometric painting and extends its questions.
