Vivian Suter

Untitled, n.d.
mixed media on canvas
180.0 x 312.0 cm
These three works resulted from the richness of Vivian Suter’s dual Swiss-Argentinian heritage—with vibrant, colourful compositions. The three pieces share an imposing format and the theme of nature, a powerful nature whose superiority the artist has accepted.

The work dated 1982 presents the energetic line of a stem, adorned with stylised leaves and an irregularly shaped canvas. With very free gestures, the other two works, probably painted later, were made with acrylic paints, sometimes mixed with organic elements, evidence of nature’s unpredictability. Earth fragments, volcanic rocks, wood and plants can often be found on Vivian Suter’s canvases between successive layers of paint, altering their texture.

Over time, her works have established an ever-deeper resonance with the earth, in sometimes blurry motifs like those found here, which can signify the movements of water, air, human or animal silhouettes, sea beds, or plant fields. All of these elements integrate and represent life forms, proving that Vivian Suter has made Guatemala’s tropical forest into her studio.
