Through art that attains the purest abstraction, Pierre Schwerzmann focuses on exploring the spatiality of the work, trying to push the material boundaries of the visible.
The artist particularly examines the flatness of the canvas and the illusionism of the pictorial field, by superimposing contradictory spatialities. Geometric sections of pure, flat colour meet subtle grey shades that create a concave/convex alternation in the viewer’s vision. Provoking a destabilising retinal confusion, their vibrations prevent the eyes from settling, creating a movement in the painting. By disrupting our visual and corporeal perception of the work, Schwerzmann succeeds in paying tribute to painting and its impossible appropriation.
Born in 1947 in Aubonne, Pierre Schwerzmann studied at the École cantonale des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne from 1968 to 1973. While teaching visual arts at the Gymnase de Nyon, he also pursued an artistic career enabling him to win several prizes and grants, and leading to exhibitions of his work in Switzerland and abroad. He lives and works in Nyon, which awarded him the Mérite artistique de la Ville in 2018. His creations can be found in many private and public collections.
