Fourth of July : Untitled, 2005
torn C-print

With “Fourth of July”, a composite series of individual prints, Christian Marclay fragments a shot of a brass band celebrating American Independence Day. Every detail evokes a sound that is inaudible but suggested, and an image that is incomplete but evocative.

With an ironic, detached perspective on this kind of patriotic event, Christian Marclay endeavours to show that which is hidden, to provoke the projection of a festive, cacophonous moment in the mind and imagination. His interpretation of this public scene suggests a visual and auditory symphony in pieces, which have to be assembled to get a complete impression of it. Here, the splitting of the photographic prints is used for the sound evocation it implies and the fragment notion to which it leads.
